“There are twenty pages of Hollywood Dance Orchestras (four in the old Arlington House edition)
and just look at the pseudonyms of the Grey Gull Studio Bands and be humbled.
If you've not yet signed up for this set and have a serious interest in this music, wait no longer.
No better job will appear in our life-time.”
~Bruce Bastin, Interstate Music
“A dream came true when I checked the Benny Goodman and other discographies:
Finally all the LP's from the 1970's and 1980's with airshots, transcriptions etc. have a "home".”
~ Fritz Marschall
From the authors’ Introduction:
“Dance music, within the context of this book, began to be played towards the end of the first decade of the last century… This book attempts to document the rise of this phenomenon, on the North American continent, both U.S.A. and Canada up to December 31, 1942… Included within these pages are all the recordings by dance bands and musicians from North America that fall within that period, wherever they were recorded, and that we have been able to trace. The criteria for recordings made away from the home continent are that the majority of performers are American or Canadian. Thus recordings made throughout the world are included.
All known commercial recordings, normal 78rpm and the special series made for theatre use, some of which played at 331/3 rpm even in the 1930s, are included. Also within these pages you will find radio transcription records, broadcasts, recorded live performances and film soundtracks which have been commercially issued, whether on tape, long play record, CD or laser disc. Nestled between session details, or as footnotes to them, we have included other information also gathered concerning the musicians, and notes on films they appeared in that have not been seen for many years, and which have not had their music soundtracks reissued.”
